If you should meet them in a drawing roomyou would think they were going to a receptiongiven at the court of some of the rOyal family.When waiting on table at full meals they only serveyou with a dish at a time. That is the custom inEurope, and they will not eat mixed food. Ifchicken is served they will have little else till theyare through with the chicken and the plate removedand replaced with a clean one. We often sit morethan an hour before all are served. For breakfastthe custom is to have nothing but bread, butterand coffee. However, the butter and the bread arealways very good. Some writer says it isthe fairest city in the world, but it did notmake that impression on us. The buildings arebeautiful, and built like most of the Italian citiesof a light colored stone, which, in the glaring sun-shine, give the city a dazzling appearance, andvery trying to the eyes. The sidewalks are verynarrow and people are compelled to walk in thedriveways of the streets. The sidewalks are onlywide enough to enable the pedestrians to go insingle file. The streets are paved as well as thesidewalks are in an American city and are kept justas clean and the only inconvenience of walking inthe streets is the danger of being run over by vehi-cles. The Florence cathedral, called the Duomo, issimply wonderful, large, grand and magnificent.
